Editoral Design

So….magazine design. For this project I chose the topic of Tim Cook doing a talk about sustainability, which I initially thought was an interesting topic and something to challenge myself with. To be honest, the final product didn’t turn out as I wanted or expected. But, that’s ok. Even though it had me scratching my head for an entire week, it was a valuable learning process.

In the beginning, I spent a lot of time doing sketches of layout and researching the topic of e-waste. I found a lot of interesting articles, and watched an interesting video about e-waste being dumped in Ghana. While sketching, I found myself concerning more on the illustration execution than the design aspect of the magazine. Therefore, I think that was where the problem started. So, after the day of the feedback, I decided to go with the idea that I have now.

So the idea of the magazine is that the spreads acts as an iphone/ipad screen. The speech bubbles are the bubbles that would appear on a chat message on an iphone. The green of the speech bubbles represent the fact that Tim Cook is talking “green”. This talk is about how Apple can become a greener, more sustainable company. (*Note: Based on research, I found that Tim Cook did went to a Climate Week in NYC*) As for the sidebar, it’s a broken iphone screen representing the e-waste that are dumped at the countries that are listed.

In the end, I would give myself a C+/B- . I am not happy with the way it’s turned out. However, I would like to take the research and sketches portion into consideration.
